Italian Tax Lawyer in Milan

The tax lawyers of Ciani Partners

An Italian tax lawyer is a lawyer specialising in tax law: they advise companies and individuals in their dealings with the Italian Revenue Agency, the Guardia di Finanza and the Customs Agency, and represent them before the Italian tax courts. In Milan, the tax lawyers of Ciani Partners handle tax assessments, tax audits, tax bills and tax litigation, from the first review up to the Italian Supreme Court.

We work with companies, corporate groups, professionals and private clients, including foreign individuals and businesses with interests in Italy. Every matter is handled directly by one of our lawyers, who reviews the position, explains the options and timing, and proposes the most suitable strategy: a settlement with the tax authorities where it makes sense, an appeal where it is needed. We work in English and Italian.

Frequently asked questions

What does an Italian tax lawyer do?

They advise companies and individuals on all aspects of Italian tax law: preventive advice, dealings with the tax authorities during audits and assessments, and representation before the Italian tax courts and, for lawyers admitted to it, the Supreme Court.

What is the difference between a tax lawyer and an accountant (commercialista)?

An Italian commercialista mainly handles bookkeeping, tax returns and compliance. A tax lawyer handles the legal side: interpreting the rules, dealing with the tax authorities and defending the taxpayer in court. The two often work together, and the firm also includes chartered accountants.

When should I contact a tax lawyer?

As early as possible: at the start of a tax audit or when you receive a questionnaire or an invitation to discuss your position, and in any case immediately after a tax assessment notice or tax bill is served, because the deadlines to challenge them are short.

How long do I have to challenge a tax assessment notice?

As a general rule, an appeal to the first-instance tax court must be filed within 60 days of service. The deadline can change, for example if the adesione settlement procedure is started, so it is best to have the notice reviewed straight away.

How does the first consultation work?

In the first meeting we review the documents and your situation and outline the possible options. Afterwards we send a technical assessment and a proposal for assistance. To book one, fill in the form below or call the firm.

Do you assist clients outside Milan or abroad?

Yes. The firm is based in Milan but assists clients throughout Italy and from abroad, in English and Italian, including on international tax and tax residence matters.
